Time Management and Organization Tip of the Week #10: Be Realistic

Kaarin Anderson Ryan, PhD 3.7.24

Making lists, setting schedules, prioritizing… all these tools can be incredibly helpful for effective time management and organization. As you use these tools, it is also important to set realistic expectations for yourself. Lists, for example, are easy to make, but not always easy to complete. As you create your systems for improving your day-to-day productivity, make sure that you don’t set yourself up for failure by making your expectations unrealistic. This can lead to negative feelings about yourself and your work, and can make it more difficult to motivate yourself. Try to keep your expectations reasonable for the time you have to work on them, and remember that if you don’t quite get to everything you can move it to the priority list for the next day or the next week.
